PRIVATE EDUCATION LOAN OMBUDSMAN FOR THE CONSUMER FINANCIAL PROTECTION BUREAU

Robert G. Cameron

Robert G. Cameron is currently the Private Education Loan Ombudsman for the CFPB, a position “responsible for receiving, reviewing, and attempting to resolve complaints from private student loan borrowers.”

  • Previously worked as a senior attorney for PHEAA, a student loan servicer, while it battled class-action lawsuits and state regulators for allegedly mishandling student loans.
  • As of September 2018, PHEAA was facing ten class-action lawsuits brought by tens of thousands of borrowers who have been saddled with additional debt because the servicer allegedly failed to properly process payments.
  • The CFPB reported in 2017 that FedLoan, an arm of” PHEAA, was “derailing hundreds of public-sector workers from receiving student loan forgiveness.” Data from the Department Of Education showed the 99% of applications for loan Forgiveness under the program were denied, as of October 2018.
  • Authored a presentation to the student loan industry warning that courts are interpreting consumer protection laws “even more liberally in favor of the consumer” — and advised industry to “create situations where there are easy facts to support a motion to dismiss” lawsuits brought by consumers.
  • Was Deputy Chief Counsel for PHEAA while it frequently used “claims of sovereign immunity to avoid lawsuits by state regulators” while serving as PHEAA’s Deputy Chief Counsel, an argument federal courts have repeatedly rejected.
